Segregated Chicago
hypersegregation: a form of racial segregation that consists of the geographical grouping of racial groups (Wiktionary).
Hypersegregation is often used to describe Chicago's racial demography, even to this day.
"Other ethnic enclaves have existed in Chicago, of course, but they were never nearly as concentrated, and their residents tended to assimilate and disperse fairly quickly. For Chicago's blacks, dispersal wasn't an option; given the violence that greeted them when they moved into white neighborhoods..." (Bogira).
Some people think that segregated neighborhoods are created by choice, that the African-Americans want it like that. According to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas it results from "innocent private decisions" (Bogira).
This simply is not true.
"Because of historical--and some continuing--discrimination, blacks are more likely to be poor. When this is combined with segregation, it means blacks are for more likely than any other group to live in concentrated poverty " (Bogira).
